Interview - Sweden 1986 - Surrender, Soul Deep, Secrets That She Keeps

Rep: Per Gessle and Marie Fredriksson from Roxette, please!  (Surrender)

Rep: What is there in your music which draws attention more than other bands? I would appreciate a short analyse, thanks.

Per: Well, it is not so easy to answer this question. Perhaps there is something, as you say.

Rep: Yes, but this appearance you have just had here was quite good.

Per: I don’t know. Perhaps we share the song together; we don’t get tired very quickly as if there were a single person who sings...perhaps. For example my favourite bands like Eagles, Beatles and others, all of them have had several songs sung by a different person in the band. And all these songs were on the same album. On the other hand it is because we have a very good singer, called Marie.

Marie: Thank you for that!

Per: She is very talented, you can’t doubt at all when she sings.

Marie: I have to say also that we have a very good song writer (points at Per), so it’s not only me.

Rep: How do you think that this fact will influence your other career? We can start with you, Per, do you think that your solo music will sound differently?

Per: No, I don’t think so. I have always had my writing style of pop music, perhaps I can try to write different texts. So I think that Roxette will help me a lot with my solo career. It was the same with Gyllene Tider, I was able to make my solo albums as well.

Rep: Marie?

Marie: If I have to make a comparison, I can say that I write better in Swedish. I don’t think that there will be too much influence. I am somewhere in the middle. Regarding my voice, I can feel that I sing differently when I do my own things, compared to how I sing in Roxette. So it will be interesting to see.

Rep: Will you have more self-confidence, perhaps?

Marie: Yes, I am sure of that.

Rep: What makes you work so well together? What is there between you when you work so well?

Per: Well, there is love! (all laugh)

Marie: Well, we have known each other for 10 year. We don’t feel any kind of competition between us, so we just feel good together; we spend a lot of time working.

Per: And we have always been like that; if something does not function, it’s not the end of the world. It doesn’t work, ok, we try something else.

Rep: Do you accept to be criticised? Do you say to him: well, you sound so bad in this song?

Per: It’s much worse than this! (they laugh)

Marie: Well, sometimes he complains about my English pronunciation, but we solve that. We help each other very much.

Per: On the other hand, I think that it functions so well because we are different personalities. We like different music. And we almost never like the same thing. So you learn each other, you respect each other. I think that this is the essence.
